The green gold of the valley
Discover the only coffee grown in Europe, a gastronomic gem that arrived in the Agaete valley in the 19th century from the Botanical Garden of Tenerife. This typical variety of coffee, one of the oldest of the Coffea arabica species, is grown in a unique way in association with other subtropical fruit trees such as banana, orange, papaya and mango, taking advantage of the natural shade. The valley's volcanic soils and ideal temperatures (23°C during the day/17°C at night) create perfect conditions for its cultivation at less than 400 metres above sea level, something exceptional in the world of coffee. Traditionally, the berries were dried in the sun on rooftops and shelled by hand. After its revival in 2006 under the brand name ‘Café de Agaete’, this coffee has gained international prestige for its fruity and sweet flavour with notes of chocolate and liquorice, and is even used by leading chefs in the archipelago.
